I walked into the dojo for the first time at the start of this year, not really sure what to expect as an adult beginner. Just recently I went through my first grading, and to be completely honest, it was one of the most intense but rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. People tried to explain grading to me – how nervous I might feel or how the whole process works – but honestly, you don’t get it until you go through it yourself.
The energy in the dojo that evening was something else. Everyone brought so much enthusiasm and support. It wasn’t just about passing or failing; it was about the team spirit and encouragement from the whole dojo. Standing there, sweating through my gi, I felt a real sense of belonging. You hear people talk about “dojo family,” but it’s 100% true here. You’re never left to figure things out by yourself, and even when you’re struggling through a tough drill, you know everyone’s rooting for you.
I’ll admit, at 40, starting something totally new was a little intimidating. The Senseis don’t go easy on you just because you’re an adult, but that’s actually what I appreciate most. They push you, challenge you, and hold you to a high standard, but at the same time, they genuinely care about you getting better and growing – not just as a martial artist, but as a person too.
The progress in these 11 months has been more than just physical. My fitness has shot up, but honestly, my confidence and focus outside the dojo have gotten a massive boost too. I’ve made friends with people from all walks of life, and every session leaves me feeling stronger and more motivated. If I could give advice to anyone thinking about trying karate for the first time, especially as an adult, it’s this: don’t wait. My only regret is not joining sooner.
Here’s to many more months – and gradings – ahead!
